Applied to a social group, it is sometimes used to denote elitism or an indifference to the plight of others. The name "narcissism" was coined by Freud after a Greek myth about a pathologically self-absorbed young man. Freud believed that some narcissism is an essential part of all of us from birth. Andrew P. Morrison claims that, in adults, a reasonable amount of healthy narcissism allows the individual's perception of his needs to be balanced in relation to others. Mythological sourceIn Greek mythology, Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who had never seen his reflection. The nymph Echo had been punished by Hera for gossiping by being cursed to forever "have the last word". Echo had seen Narcissus walking through the forest and wanted to talk to him, but because of the curse she wasn't able to speak first. When Narcissus became thirsty and stopped to take a drink, he saw his reflection in the water for the first time. Not knowing any better, he fell in love and started talking to it. Echo had been following him and started repeating the last thing he said. Not yet understanding reflections, Narcissus thought his reflection was speaking to him and became more engaged. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away at the pool and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How should I deal with a father who has narcissistic personality disorder? Q. I have recently realized that as a child and adolescent I suffered extensive emotional and psychological abuse from my father, who is clearly narcissistic. My parents are paying for my education but I have minimized contact with them as much as possible for my own mental health. What should I do if a therapist is unwilling to intervene or confront my father because she does not believe that my concerns are legitimate? Personally, I believe most therapists will believe you if you were to tell them about your father and give them examples of why you believe your father is this way, if your therapist doesn't believe you it's time for a new therapist. If you are a minor and your father is emotionally abusing you, your therapist or you should make a call to child protective services. If you are not a minor you can have the choice to not be around your father if you don't want to be. Be happy that your education is being paid for, but don't pretend to be okay with any abuse. I would suggest talking this through with your therapist and be totally honest about you being worried he or she might not believe this, but that you have taken the courage to get… [cont.] Answered by Peace&Joy - Wed Sep 5 18:22:26 2007 Can a narcissistic parent lead to a child developing an anxiety disorder?
