Narcissism is the personality trait of egotism, vanity, conceit, or simple selfishness. Applied to a social group, it is sometimes used to denote elitism or an indifference to the plight of others.

The name "narcissism" was coined by Freud after Narcissus who in Greek myth was a pathologically self-absorbed young man who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool. Freud believed that some narcissism is an essential part of all of us from birth. Andrew P. Morrison claims that, in adults, a reasonable amount of healthy narcissism allows the individual's perception of his needs to be balanced in relation to others.

How are narcissism and a fear of abandonment linked?
Q. Are the two linked or are they separate of one another?

A. If you have a seperation anxiety then you cling to those you love or become completely independent and hate to need people. You do stuff for yourself and then I guess you can become narcissistic, thinking your God's gift to the world because you're all you need since you provide for yourself so much... I'm not a psychologist obviously, but I took a class in Jr. year of High School... lol. [[ I have seperation anxiety it isn't pretty ]].

A. It has to do with your childhood. People with narcissism felt ashamed often as a child. They couldn't live up to expectations or repeatedly failed. As a result they have developed coping mechanism s to keep them from feeling shame. Being wrong or failing would result in "narcissistic injury", which they will avoid at all costs. And try not to judge, most of this is completely out of their awareness. (They dont realize that they are being a**holes ;)... )

A. Conceited means you have an exaggerated sense of self importance or false pride. Conceited is more similar to arrogant, but arrogant is a stronger word and also implies that you think others are not as good as you. Narcissism simply means an exceptional interest in the admiration of yourself. Think of it this way, a narcissistic person would look in the mirror and say "wow, I wish I could look in the mirror all day long. I look great." A conceited person would look in the mirror and say "wow, I am certainly the best looking person around. Why can't everyone be as great as me?" It's alright to be conceited or narcissistic- especially as a 16 year old. It's better than hating yourself. Just be careful not to tell other people about… [cont.]
