Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is defined by the American Psychiatric Association as a personality disorder characterized by a pattern of excessive emotionality and attention-seeking, including an excessive need for approval and inappropriate seductiveness, usually beginning in early adulthood. These individuals are lively, dramatic, enthusiastic, and flirtatious.

They may be inappropriately sexually provocative, express strong emotions with an impressionistic style, and be easily influenced by others. Associated features may include egocentrism, self-indulgence, continuous longing for appreciation, feelings that are easily hurt, and persistent manipulative behavior to achieve their own needs.

Is Histrionic Personality Disorder really untreatable?
Q. It's said that Histrionic can only pity themselves as victims and are entirely unable to introspect. Is this true? How can seemingly intelligent people be unable to connect consequences with their own actions?

A. DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) has had some treatment success with HPD as well as other Cluster B personality disorders (e.g., Borderline Personality Disorder). Unfortunately, for the most part, most personality disorders are recalcitrant and rarely readily respond readily (long term) to ANY type of treatment. ~Dr. B.~

Has anyone gotten over a relationship with someone who had histrionic personality disorder?
Q. People like this, I have learned the hard way, are ao manipulative, they are addictive. My relationship is over, but I'm still thinking of her. She made me feel so good, but I know it wasn't real. She always knew what to say, and what to do, to get me hoooked. If you've gotten past a relationship like this, what, more than time, did you do?

A. You have to put a note on your phone that says "Do not call her even if I am dying" because she doesn't care if you are, she only cares about herself. You have to cut them off, otherwise you will be doing this for 10 or 15 years! cut her off.

histrionic personality disorder?
Q. I just found out that my sister had histrionic personality disorder. I searched it on www.answers.com and it's amazing how well this disease describes her! Does anybody know people with this disorder? Can you tell me more about it? Are they aware that they have a problem? Is it manageable or not? Will these people have this disorder for their whole life or is it curable? How is it for them to have this disorder? Do they feel bad about it? Can they have a "normal" life? Or is their life miserable? Is it possible that they will commit suicide? Thank you in advance.

A. Best solution is to go to school for journalism so you can later write a TV series about your screwed up sister.
