What kind of disorder might someone who watched a family member kill another family member develop?
Q. I am writing a story about someone in a mental institution. Any kind of theory about disorders someone in this situation might develop and why would help. And if you're good at this kind of thing: What kind of disorder might someone have if they are insanely jealous of a younger sibling because of the attention they get from a guardian? In the situation in my story, an older brother gets so jealous of the newborn in his family that he kills his mother to keep her from giving it attention.

A. What you can get is something called posttraumatic stress disorder. My sister got this when she witnessed her husband and two kids get run over by a pickup truck. War veterans get this too because of the trauma involved with killing people and constantly struggling to not be killed. Rape victims can also get this disorder. As for the jealously, there isn't a mental illness like that. Jealousy is a normal human emotion. Everyone gets jealous of someone/something at some point in their lives.He could only get in trouble if he took jealousy to the extreme like killing someone's pet to get revenge or pouring sugar in their gas tank.

What mental disorder would make a person rant and rave on for an extended period without any apparent stimuli?
Q. Other symptoms are intense focus on one person with sudden swings of extreme narcissistic behavior, inability to complete coherent sentences, anger, frustration. Is this a manic stage of bipolar disorder, or does this person have something else going on? Thanks in advance for your good answers.

A. Yes, it could be the manic phase of inadequately controlled bipolar disorder; or it could be a dual diagnosis like narcissistic personality disorder or histrionic personality disorder with some minor delusional symptoms coupled with an addiciton (eg. alcoholism).

How do people with Social Anxiety Disorder function in college?
Q. Because i'm planning on going to a good college (Cleveland State University) when i grad in a couple years from high school. And i have Social Anxiety Disorder and i would like to know how people with this disorder generally function in college.

A. Hi, I have social anxiety and am in first year college so i completely understand you. The first day i wasn't nervous at all because everyone was new and alone there and i felt that since old high school people weren't there, i wouldn't have to worry because everyone seemed alone and awkward. Class is overall easy, because from my experience there isn't a lot of pointing "ok, you. answer!" like in high school, basically whoever puts up your hand. I will admit it is hard to make friends, i have only made one friend in a year, but i feel that one is better than none :) Just try to make conversation with whoever is beside you, just say "Hey, how do you think you did on the test? or Hey, can i borrow a pen?"(yes its hard, i couldn't do it lol,… [cont.]
