Passive–aggressive behavior, a personality trait, is passive, sometimes obstructionist resistance to following through with expectations in interpersonal or occupational situations. It is a personality trait marked by a pervasive pattern of negative attitudes and passive, usually disavowed resistance in interpersonal or occupational situations.

It can manifest itself as learned helplessness, procrastination, stubbornness, resentment, sullenness, or deliberate/repeated failure to accomplish requested tasks for which one is (often explicitly) responsible.

What is an effective way of dealing with a passive aggressive type?
Q. personality types. My sister is a passive aggressive and she is very cunning, vindictive and plain evil. People who don't know her think she is very nice but, she is not. Her friends confide in her and she turns around and tells other people their secrets. I have completely alienated myself from her but, now she is trying to manipulate me by using her kids. I love my nephews but, it's a constant battle trying to have a relationship with them without her being around.

A. 1. stop labeling your sister and stop the namecalling. that is step number one. figure out how she feels and what she needs that she isn't getting. step two. talk to her "when Joyce knew about my operation, i was upset because i need to be able to trust you" then LISTEN.

Is it really possible to resolve any dispute with a passive aggressive person?
Q. passive aggressive people normally refuse to communicate openly, hold grudges and manipulate others, is there any real chance to resolve any dispute with these kind of people?

A. The last thing we want to do in a dispute is throwing labels at one another, especially bogus psychiatric labels. Diagnostic labels may be useful in medicine, because it suggest an immediate treatment. But in psychology it can often be misused and no matter what label, nobody fits in exactly with that label anyway. The only way to resolve the problem is through a course of Assertiveness Training Program, which can be called a Conflict Resolution Program. A book that is an excellent resource for this type of conflict is Make Peace with Anyone by David J. Lieberman.
